About
Our Synoptic Monitoring volunteers collect water samples three times per year at fixed locations along a stream or on Cayuga Lake. The term “synoptic monitoring” means that data gathered during these efforts is collected on the same day, within a few hours, to ensure that stream flow and meteorological conditions are consistent across all locations. This approach provides a comprehensive yet succinct understanding of the waterbody being sampled. These samples are then analyzed at CSI’s state-certified water testing laboratory for analysis producing a rich dataset of regulatory-quality water quality data. This program requires an annual refresher training (a part of our Quality Assurance Project Plan) where volunteers re-calibrate equipment, review sampling protocol and locations, learn about the water quality trends in the subwatershed where you sample, and coordinate the year’s sampling events. It is also a great opportunity to connect with other volunteers who sample near you and build community! We are always looking for volunteers who are interested in monitoring the following creeks:
- Fall Creek / Virgil Creek
- Cayuga Inlet
- Six Mile Creek
- Salmon Creek
- Taughannock Creek
- Trumansburg Creek
- Milliken Creek
- Yawger Creek
- Great Gully Creek
- Canoga Creek
- Burroughs Creek
- Sheldrake Creek
- Johnsons Creek
Sampling typically takes place on weekday mornings. Monitoring events are scheduled at the beginning of each year with each monitoring team.
To become a Synoptic Sampling Volunteer or to get more information, please email info@communityscience.org! We are always looking for volunteers for this program.
Volunteers have been monitoring water quality through this program since 2002! To ensure consistency in our dataset, volunteers MUST adhere to all monitoring program protocols.
This volunteer work involves outdoor activity in a variety of weather conditions. Some walking may be required as well as climbing down into streams.
As we begin 2025, we look forward to continuing to inspire and empower communities to safeguard water resources by cultivating scientific literacy through volunteer water quality monitoring, certified laboratory analyses, and by providing education opportunities! Please reach out and let us know if the following opportunity interests you. No experience needed, all are welcome! Our synoptic stream monitoring program will begin again in March - just a few short months away! In preparation for the 2025 season, we are actively recruiting new volunteers for the program and scheduling the annual mandatory (virtual) training sessions.
